Los Calvos were the project of Ray Pérez, a bandleader and pianist on a high after forming one of Venezuela’s most beloved big bands, Los Dementes, and soon to be taking a new band, Las Kenya, into legendary status. But for barely more than a year, between 1967 and 1968, came Los Calvos, an iconic group who brought a drum kit into salsa for the first time, went in hard and heavy with two trumpets, and who had two of Venezuela’s finest vocalists, in El Negrito Calaven and Carlos “Carlín” Asicio Rodríguez. They are, without doubt, one of salsa`s rare gems, and ripe for rediscovery.
