Fiol, once co-leader of Saoco, a briefly up-and-coming group of the mid-`70s, has made a heaping handful of the most consistently elegant recordings in Cuban-tipico vein, embellishing the classic conjunto sound occasionally, but relying mostly on an outstanding talent and tastefulness. This recording — his last for SAR — has passages of particularly fine solo trumpet and sax, and a flash or two of post-bop phrasing in the bridges. In both, the result is wonderful: a down-home class act. The effect of classic Cuban coro punctuated by solo sax is subtly mind-blowing
