KASSAV met K`toz, het 14e (officiële) album uit 2004
Zouk is het Creoolse woord voor feest. Het is ook de naam van een genre dat uitgevonden is door de Antilliaanse band Kassav, die de Antilliaanse carnavalsmuziek wilde moderniseren. Met zangers, dansers, een hoornsectie, keyboard, elektrische (bas)gitaren, drums en diverse percussie-instrumenten speelde Kassav een nieuw soort muziek dat een mengeling was van Afrikaanse stijlen, Caribische pop en Amerikaanse funk. De feestmuziek van de in 1979 opgerichte band werd in de tachtiger jaren zo populair dat Kassav tournees maakte door Europa, de Ivoorkust, Mali, Brazilië, Haïti en zelfs Rusland. Naast groeps albums maakten zangeres Jocelyne Béroard, gitarist Jacob Desvarieux en andere Kassav-leden ook soloalbums in zouk-stijl met medewerking van Kassav-collega`s. Alle soloalbums meegerekend zou het oeuvre van Kassav dan ook rond de 47 albums omvatten, maar officieel is K`toz het veertiende album van de band. K`toz bevat gastoptredens van Passi en Lady Sweety. K toz features Kassav“s zouk founding fathers, Georges Decimus and Jacob Desvarieux, plus all the mainstays except Patrick Saint-Eloi. As usual, the production is first rate. The enormous lineup of Antillean and African churn out tremendous torque here nevertheless. There`s also plenty of pulverizing percussion and swing for dancers. Kassav` always manages to reconnect with its drumming roots, gwo ka and zouk`s precursor, cadence. They also deftly inject touches of creolized European dance rhythms into the pot. The mix of all these styles and many more went into creating the primal zouk wave. Kassav` is the best at reaffirming all these musical currents that go into the fine mix that is zouk par excellence. The different vocalists` timbre always give Kassav` albums varied textures and feelings. This album doesn`t take a ballad breather until the ninth track. The founding fathers can still kick it, and kick they do after 25 or so releases. Highly recommended.
