Amazing sounds from the Congo scene of the 50s – as singers here work with their own acoustic guitar for accompaniment, often with additional guitar as well – and usually a glass bottle providing a spare sort of rhythm! The style is quite different than later, more blues-based material of this nature – still very inflected with Congolese sense of melody and language – often at a level that has the voice really standing as the leading force of each tune!
