Watch Out! ¡Ten Cuidao! - Mambo Legends Orchestra is een orkest o.l.v. José Madera, waar de meeste musici hun sporen verdiend hebben in de band van wijlen Tito Puente. José Madera, John ‘Dandy’ Rodriquez en Mitch Frohman zijn de drijvende krachten achter deze big-band die de gouden tijden doen herleven van het Palladium in New York anno jaren 50, waar de rivaliserende mambo orkesten van Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez en Machito de scepter zwaaiden, en Afro-Cubaanse ritmes verweven met de blazersecties conform hoe de Jazz Bigbands die hadden. En ‘sharp dressed’ dames en heren, moves, dips & tricks uitvonden, die je heden ten dage nog op de dansvloer ziet. In Nueva York, waar al die Puerto Ricaanse en Cubaanse immigranten overdag een bestaan wilde opbouwen en ’s nachts de trend zetten. Die tijdloze sound van toen hoor je geweldig terug op deze uitstekende dubbelaar.

Vocalen van Marco Bermudez, Jorge Maldonado, Cita Rodriguez (de dochter van de wijlen Pete Él Conde’ Rodriquez!) én Frankie Vazquez.

Being the remaining contingent of Tito Puente’s band, Mambo Legends Orchestra is essentially the Latin reply to today’s Count Basie Orchestra, aiming to preserve the vibrancy of 40s/50s core mambo and salsa – there’s no better band to do the job, obviously, than the one on this 2-disker.

Frankie Vazquez’ heavy/slithery tenor is as authentic as you could hope to encounter in such a preservation project, his vocal on Hugo Gonzalez’ “Vamos Pa`l Guateque” just one of several barrio-authentic turns, a few heartfelt “Hey! Jose!” bromantic shout-outs thrown in to good effect. Like the recent Basie efforts, there’s a little too much empty digital space and antiseptic aftertaste that one doesn’t find on vinyl versions, but I suppose that’s a complaint you could lob at pretty much any genre that wasn’t invented yesterday.

Whatever, if you like this genre, this is essential, no question.
