With this "Live from Stern Grove Festival" album does match their Grammy-winning debut album, the Pacific Mambo Orchestra is a hot, swinging ensemble. With emphasis on Pacific, the album also includes the Japanese standard Sakura sung by Nora Suzuki (Orq de la Luz) as a studio track, along with two other studio productions, Getaway, and Pacific Mambo Dance No. 2. At the live concert, they also had guest musicians Sheila E. singing and playing timbales and pianist Marlow Rosado on a delicious rendition of Pink Panther Mambo. Other than Mancini and tunes by Tito Puente, Sheila Escovedo, and Beloyd Taylor & Peter Cor Belensky, the writing is by orchestra directors Steffen Kuehn, trumpet, and Christian Tumalan, piano and keyboard. The music is salsa with contemporary pop flavor, with lead vocalists Braulio Barrera, Alexa Morales, Omar Ledezma, Jr., and Armando Cordoba. Puente`s Ran Kan Kan is sheer joy. The fire blazes superhot with Earth, Wind & Fire`s Getaway. The album slows its tempo only a tad with the ballad Serenity and the poetic Storm. The second bookend of Sakura closes the opus. Powerful, expert musicianship is evident throughout, and the bright and happy, fast dance music sweeps any gloom away.
