Prachtig 2012 Cubaans son album, de mooiste in dit genre van dit jaar met gast vocalisten Ruben Blades, Cheo Feliciano, Jose Alberto.

How can you go wrong with Ruben Blades singing Matamoros`, "Lágrimas negras" and Arsenio’s "Contéstame", both sung by Mr. Blades` alter ego, Medoro Madera (he needs to do an entire CD with this persona). Cheo Feliciano lends his passionate smooth stylings on "Un poquito de tu amor," while José Alberto "El Canario" gives much swing to "Amor silvestre." Other guests include Jimmy Bosch and his trombone, Edwin Colón with his cuatro, Luisito Quintero on bongos, ...in other words it’s an all-star recording.

But this is not just about the guest stars. Septeto Santiaguero shows they can hold their own. On the title track, Ismael Borges` sonero style will have many dying of envy. Rudens Matos doubles on guitar and vocals on the changüí-inspired "Yo sí tumbo la mata." And through it all, Eddy Lobaina’s trumpet is exquisite.

For some, this recording may seem too slow. For others, it will bring back those memories of dancing in a little square, where all you could feel is your partner’s body pressed against yours, creating all types of friction, or as we say in Spanish, "limpiando hebilla" (cleaning the belt buckle). ‘Vamos pa’ la fiesta’ is een album dat opvalt door zijn melodische melodieën die zich bewegen over diverse stijlen. Uiteraard de son, maar ook horen we de danzon, de bolero en zelfs de Colombiaanse cumbia die doorschemert in ‘Vamos a Bailar’. Septeto Santiaguero klinkt hecht en compact en zet een zeer dansbare set neer waarbij de meerstemmig gezongen strofen bijzonder fraai en coherent klinken. Het septet wordt bijgestaan door een klein dozijn gastmusici. Naast een aantal blazers zijn er ook een aantal gastzangers, waaronder Ruben Blades (1948). Hij zingt de klassieker ‘Lágrimas Negras’, ooit geschreven door Miguel Matamores, de leider van het legendarische Trio Matamores (met o.a. Guillermo Portabales en Beny Moré). Bovendien zingt Blades een ongelooflijk mooie vertolking van ‘Contéstame’, waarbij hij in de hoogte zijn stem optimaal benut, zonder over te schakelen op kopstem. De Puerto Ricaanse zanger Cheo Feliciano (1935) zingt ‘Un poquito de tu amor’ met zijn warme, ietwat hese stem, waarbij het intro een muzikale afdruk is van ‘Take the ‘A’-Train’ (Duke Ellington). ‘Amor Silvestre’ wordt tenslotte gezongen door Jose Alberto ‘El Canario’ uit de Dominicaanse Republiek die opvalt door zijn heerlijk luie timing.
