Wow. From the first slap of the conga on the first tune, Las Calles de La Habana, it`s easy to hear why Los Papines are considered as good as they are. Absolute rhythmic authority mixes with a great sound; all of it leads to musical profundity. On a few tracks the band is joined by a group that includes clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and rhythm section. There`s a tres joining the group, too, and Yuliet Abreu Hernandez, sings several tunes; it`s nice to hear a woman singing rumba. The band, with horns, radically reworks "Lullaby of Birdland" as a rumba, using Abakua rhythms. Highly Recommended. 2004 release from the Afro-Cuban group recorded in Havana.
