Trombonist Dewell Narvaez and his band typified the rootsy urban trombone-based salsa of the `70s. Their 1975 breakout album "Reincarnation" (Tico 1402) turned out to be their only release, but it has become somewhat of a treasured item among salsa collectors. Mr. Narvaez has not only reimerged, but has assembled a core group of musicians and singers that can actually do justice to the classic salsa sound. Milton Cardona is on congas, and José Mangual Jr. plays bongó (and sings coro) on this album. Classic salsa doesn`t get more authentic than that.
Narvaez is joined by trombonist Reynaldo Jorge, timbalero David Lugo, pianist Victor Santos, and bassist Adalberto Ibarra. Then you have the singers: Julio Salgado, Frankie Vasquez, Willie Amadeo, Ray Bayona, and Renzo Padilla. This is a powerhouse of vocal talent. The album is dedicated to the Puerto Ricans who represented 65th Infantry who fought in the Korean War. It is a statement about resilience and fortitude that clearly comes through in the music.
