Dominican singer, composer, and bandleader Juan Luis Guerra is one of the few true innovators in contemporary Latin music. He created a revolution when he reinvented traditional merengue with smart, poetic lyrics, jazz harmonies, and higher production values. In Bachata Rosa (1991) he similarly updated the lowly bachata, the rural, Dominican down-home version of the romantic ballad. Songs such as "Estrellitas y Duendes (Little Stars and Goblins)," "Como Abeja al Panal (Like a Bee to the Beehive)," "Burbujas de Amor (Love Bubbles)," and the title track revisit the old love themes with rare grace and subtle poetic flair. As some critics have noted, these songs aren`t bachatas in a strict sense; rather, they fuse bachata with the bolero and ballad styles in the same way that Guerra`s merengues are often fusions of other uptempo tropical styles like soca and salsa. In any event, Guerra is credited with popularizing bachata in the early `90s and rightfully so. Both "Burbujas de Amor" and "Estrellitas y Duendes" reached the Top Five of the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart, and Guerra won a Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
