1963 Afro Cuban Latin Jazz
Eso es" an anomaly, man. Most people would be very surprised to see Duke Pearson, Lalo Schifrin, and other greats of jazz all on pre-1965 Audio Fidelity. Pearson and Schifrin share the directorial duties, although Felipe Yanez handles the job for two tracks. Chocolate, the drummer and ostensible leader, is very apparent on the conga solos. It would have been nice to have had Aguabella return; he and Chocolate appear on an earlier Katherine Dunham LP on Audio Fidelity. Surprisingly, the other "Chocolate" -- Alfredo Armenteros, the trumpeter -- also is on this date! Nat Hentoff`s notes are wonderful as always, except for being a little duplicitous. As Latin jazz goes, Eso es Latin Jazz...Man! is doomed to obscurity simply for being on the Audio Fidelity label. It is not without its merits, however. The Gillespie and Ellington tunes are effective; "Kush" particularly combines conga with exotic flute melody. But the progressive tracks are the two fast-paced vocal numbers by Felipe Yanez. These unselfconscious, swinging examples of true Latin jazz surpass the arrangements of Pearson and Schifrin.
